Nilson Engineering was one of the first areas built on the Mars colony, and is the primary producer for virtually all of the colony's items. It can be accessed from Central Control via a staircase locked behind a door that requires the Nilson Engineering Keycard. It requires 1300 units of power to be active; without power, none of the machines will function.

The map of Nilson Engineering.

Description[]

Nilson Engineering takes up a single floor and has its own oxygen and thermal generators, like other sub-Central locations, although these are still initially broken. Nilson is quite large and contains the second highest number of usable machines of any location, second only to Central Control. All of these machines are found in an exceptionally large room in the center of the floor, spread about with the Material Storage and Production Output in the center of the room. The southern half of the floor is taken up by residential rooms: small bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, a recreation room, and a medical office. The oxygen and thermal generators are found in the west, as well as a staircase to Herbert Research, locked with a sub-door keycard. To the east and north are a plethora of containers that hold an abundance of miscellaneous items, perfect for use with Nilson's Tech and Bio Recycle Systems.

The machines in Nilson are (starting in the northwest in clockwise order) the Ore Refining System, a remote Biosphere Accelerator, the Tech Recycle System, the 3D Printing System, the Bio Combine System, the Bio Recycle System, a remote Mine Extractor, and the Bio Processing System. The remote terminals work identically to the local machines that are found in the Biosphere and Mine, but require level 2 software in the respective location to work on Hardcore and Nightmare difficulty (level 1 on Easy and Normal). Only the 3D Printing System and Bio Combine System have software that can be improved, although installing Level 2 Engineering Software allows remote use of the recycling systems in Central Control (in the aforementioned difficulties).

Points of Interest[]

3D Printing System[]

The MPO 3D Printing System is used to produce technological items that Albert West can use. This system requires blueprints which are obtained by completing research at the Tech Research System. It is the technological equivalent of the Bio Combine System. Once a blueprint is available, and the required items are stored in the Material Storage, an item can begin production. Once an item is produced, it is automatically placed in the Production Output. This system is found in Nilson Engineering, but can be remotely accessed in Central Control once the 3D Printing System has Level 2 Engineering Software installed on Hardcore and Nightmare difficulty (level 1 on Easy and Normal)

The MPO 3D Printing System can produce the following items:

Bio Combine System[]

The MPO Bio Combine System is used to produce biological items that Albert West can use. This system requires blueprints which are obtained by completing research at the Bio Research System. It is the biological equivalent to the 3D Printing System. Once a blueprint is available, and the required items are stored in the Material Storage, an item can begin production. Once an item is produced, it is placed in the Production Output. This system is found in Nilson Engineering, but can be remotely accessed in Central Control once the 3D Printing System has Level 2 Engineering Software installed on Hardcore and Nightmare difficulty (level 1 on Easy and Normal).

The MPO Bio Combine System can produce the following items:

Ore Refining System[]

The MPO Ore Refining System is used to refine the ores that are extracted by the Mine Extractor. This system takes the ores from the Material Storage and refines them into a material, which is stored in the Material Storage as well, that can be used in production. This same refining process can be performed on gems, which may be found while looting the various showcases in the colony. This system is found in Nilson Engineering, but can be remotely accessed in Central Control once the 3D Printing System has Level 2 Engineering Software installed on Hardcore and Nightmare difficulty (level 1 on Easy and Normal). Other than for remote control purposes, the level of software has no effect on this machine.

The MPO Ore Refining System can refine the following items:

Software Level Ore Harvest Time (min) Gem¹ Refined Ore Refine Time (min)
1 Nickel Ore 11.66 Nickel Gem Palladium 5.82
1 Ilmenite Ore 13.32 Ilmenite Gem Titanium 6.66
2 Monazite Ore 14.16 Monazite Gem Cerium 7.08
2 Bastnaesite Ore 15.82 Bastnaesite Gem Neodymium 7.9
3 Gadolinite Ore 14.16 Gadolinite Gem Scandium 7.08
3 Xenotime Ore 15 Xenotime Gem Yttrium 7.5
4 Petalite Ore 15.82 Petalite Gem Lithium 7.9
4 Apolonite Ore 16.66 Apolonite Gem Casandrium 8.32

Bio Processing System[]

The MPO Bio Processing System is used to refine the plants that are produced by the Biosphere Accelerator. This system takes the plants from the Material Storage and refines them into a material, which is stored in the Material Storage as well, that can be used in production. This system is found in Nilson Engineering, but can be remotely accessed in Central Control once the Bio Combine System has Level 2 Engineering Software installed on Hardcore and Nightmare difficulty (level 1 on Easy and Normal). Other than for remote control purposes, the level of software has no effect on this machine.

The MPO Bio Processing System can refine the following items:

Software Level Plant Harvest Time (min) Liquid Process Time (min)
1 Grapes 10.82 Resveratrol 5.4
1 Tomato 10.82 Lycopene 5.4
2 Peanut 10.82 Isoflavones 5.4
2 Corn 11.66 Zeaxanthin 5.82
3 Carrot 11.66 Alpha-Carotene 5.82
3 Lemon 10.82 Hesperidin 5.4
4 Garlic 13.32 Allicin 6.66
4 Onion 14.16 Quercetin 7.08

Tech and Bio Recycle Systems[]

The recycling systems are used to recycle items into their basic components, which can be used to produce other items. The Tech Recycle System can be remotely accessed from Central Control once the 3D Printing System has Level 2 Engineering Software installed, and the Bio Recycle System can be remotely accessed from Central Control once the Bio Combine System has Level 2 Engineering Software installed on Hardcore and Nightmare difficulty (level 1 on Easy and Normal). Other than for remote control purposes, the level of software has no effect on these machines.

The MPO Tech Recycle System can recycle any item that can be produced at the 3D Printing System and all miscellaneous items (except for the biological items that enemies drop and oxygen/temperature related items; these can be recycled at the Bio Recycle System). Crowbars, wrenches, and hammers can also be recycled at this system.

The MPO Bio Recycle System can recycle any item that can be produced at the Bio Combine System (except the purification filter and regulator) as well as the biological miscellaneous items that enemies drop. Broken Oxygen Filters and Temperature Regulators can also be recycled at this system.

Once recycled, the resulting materials are automatically placed into the Material Storage.

Material Storage[]

Shared between Central Control and Nilson Engineering, the Material Storage is where all production machines take the needed resources from. Resources cannot be used from West's inventory, and Material Storage will not accept any non-Material items, so there are very few reasons to take anything from it. This does not mean that West will never have to put something into this storage, however. Gems in particular are notable for only being found via looting or recycling loot, and must be put into Material Storage in order to actually be refined, which is their only use. Some ores and Biosphere products can occasionally be found, as well, which should be stored here.

Material Storage technically has a carrying capacity of 240 stacks or 99999kg, but neither limit is likely to be reached without significant effort.

Production Output[]

Production Output is where the 3D Printing System and Bio Combine System place their products once production is complete. Unlike Material Storage, this storage unit will store any item, so it can serve as a potential storage space or as a way to move items en masse to and from Central Control and Nilson Engineering.

Production Output has a carrying capacity of 70 stacks (or, technically, 99999kg, but this is impossible to reach with only 70 stacks of items).
