Life support refers to items that provide oxygen and warmth to either Albert West or the environment. Without enough oxygen, either in a personal supply or in the environment, West will soon suffocate and rapidly lose HP. Similarly, if the temperature is too low, then West will eventually become crippled and dehydrate faster. Most sectors in MPO have dysfunctional life support when first encountered, so personal life support is necessary to initially explore them.

Oxygen CanistersEdit

Oxygen canisters are a type of equipment that allows West to survive in low-oxygen environments. An oxygen canister must be charged at an oxygen charging station before it can be used, and will slowly lose this charge while in low-oxygen environments. Without a charged oxygen canister equipped, West will quickly lose HP while he is in low-oxygen environments.

A plethora of oxygen canisters can be found in Central Control and the other core sectors, primarily near the stairs to Nilson Engineering and Herbert Research and in containers near the oxygen generators. Oxygen canisters can be researched at the Bio Research System to get the blueprints for higher capacity canisters.

Oxygen FiltersEdit

Oxygen filters are a replaceable component of every oxygen generator; installing a functional filter will set the sector's oxygen to 100%. Restoring atmosphere to a sector will both decrease the infection rate (along with thermal regulators) and allow West to traverse the sector without the need for oxygen canisters, as long as power is supplied. Each sector of MPO has its own individual oxygen generator. For the multi-floored inner sectors and outer sectors, one generator will be found on a random floor of the sector between F01 and F05 (inclusive) and will supply oxygen to the entirety of the sector.

To craft a new oxygen filter, West must first perform research on an oxygen filter, broken or otherwise, using the Bio Research System at Herbert Research. This will make the blueprint for an intact filter available for production at the Bio Combine System at Nilson Engineering. Broken filters can sometimes be found in crates near oxygen generators, and are always found installed inside the station's many non-functioning oxygen generators. A broken filter cannot be repaired, so it is useless outside of research and recycling.

Once installed, an oxygen filter will never break, but further research will lead to the production of improved versions that inhibit the infection's spread. A purification filter can only be produced after researching the Purification Data.

List of Oxygen FiltersEdit

Without an oxygen filter installed and powered in a sector, an oxygen canister is needed there and the sector's oxygen level (an Infection stat) will be 40 to 50, depending on the sector's distance from Central Control. Better filters will lower the infection oxygen level, thus decreasing the infection rate.

TriviaEdit

  • Without a functioning filter powered, each sector will stabilize at different oxygen levels, which affects both how quickly West's oxygen canister depletes and the sector's oxygen level (with respect to infection rate; see table). Central Control stabilizes at 60% oxygen, core sectors at 50% oxygen and 40 oxygen level, inner sectors at 35% and 43 oxygen level, outer sectors at 15% and 47 oxygen level, and all other sectors at 0% and 50 oxygen level.

    The now-removed MK IV.

During the game's beta, purification was not a part of the game yet, so the purification filter did not exist. Instead, there was a MK IV filter that could be made, which simply lowered the infection rate even further. Although it cannot be produced anymore, it can be spawned using the cheat console.

Thermal CanistersEdit

Thermal canisters are a type of equipment that allows West to survive in colder environments. A thermal canister must be charged at a thermal charging station before it can be used, and will slowly lose this charge while in colder environments. Without a charged thermal canister equipped, West will eventually become crippled while he is in colder environments, and his thirst will build up more quickly.

A few thermal canisters can be found in Central Control and the other core sectors, primarily near the stairs to Nilson Engineering and Herbert Research and in containers near the thermal generators. Thermal canisters can be researched at the Bio Research System to get the blueprints for higher capacity canisters.

Thermal RegulatorsEdit

Thermal regulators are a replaceable component of every thermal generator; installing a functional regulator will set the sector's temperature to 20º C. Restoring heat to a sector will both decrease the infection rate (along with oxygen filters) and allow West to traverse the sector without the need for thermal canisters as long as power is supplied. Each sector of MPO has its own individual thermal generator. For the multi-floored inner sectors and outer sectors, one generator will be found on the last floor of the sector and will warm the entirety of the sector.

To craft a new thermal regulator, West must first perform research on a thermal regulator, broken or otherwise, using the Bio Research System at Herbert Research. This will make the blueprint for an intact filter available for production at the Bio Combine System at Nilson Engineering. Broken regulators can sometimes be found in crates near thermal generators, and are always found installed inside the station's many non-functioning thermal generators. A broken regulator cannot be repaired, which makes it useless outside of research and recycling.

Once installed, a thermal regulator will never break, but further research will lead to the production of improved versions that inhibits the infection's spread. A purification regulator can only be produced after researching the purification data.

TriviaEdit

  • Without a functioning regulator powered, each sector will stabilize at different temperatures, which affects both how quickly West's thermal canister depletes and the sector's temperature (with respect to infection rate; see table). Central Control stabilizes at -4ºC, core sectors at -10ºC and 40 infection temperature, inner sectors at -19ºC and 43 infection temperature, outer sectors at -31ºC and 47 infection temperature, and all other sectors at -40ºC and 50 infection temperature. However, the Mars surface (Murray Mansion F01) uniquely is always at 20ºC, the temperature that a regulator will bring a sector to.

    The now-removed MK IV.

During the game's beta, purification was not a part of the game yet, so the purification regulator did not exist. Purification DataEdit

Purification Data

The Purification Data is an item that is simply researched, requiring level 3 research software and 8 hours 53 minutes in the Bio Research System. It is found in F02 of Murray Mansion. Researching this allows the production of purification filters and regulators, which will completely cleanse all infection from sectors that they are installed in. However, obtaining the data causes all sectors' infection rates to triple, significantly accelerating the reproduction and evolution of mutants. Cleansing the entire colony, by installing purifiers in all sectors (except Central Control) for 24 hours, is required to fight the final mutant.

A purification filter and regulator can be installed into a sector's generators. After a sector has purification equipment installed and powered for 24 hours, the sector will be purified, reducing the infection rate to 0 and instantly killing any mutants still in the sector (nothing will be dropped). Turning the power off in a sector will bring the local infection back up to 60, allowing enemies to spawn. The purification equipment can be replaced with non-purification equivalents and enemies still will not spawn in that sector (as long as power is supplied). However, in order to enter the final battle, all sectors (except Central Control) must be purified, have a purification filter and regulator installed, and have power.
